Buffering on Fire TV or Android TV? A 10-minute fix list
A step-by-step checklist to stop buffering and freezing on Fire TV, Google TV and Android TV, from the quickest fixes to the most effective ones.
Check the service status, restart the device and router, switch to 5 GHz or Ethernet, clear the app cache, then free up storage. Most buffering is solved by the first three steps.
The checklist
Check the status page (30 s)
If there’s an incident on our side, nothing on your end will fix it. See service status.
Restart properly (2 min)
Unplug the streaming device and the router for 30 seconds. On Fire TV you can also use Settings › My Fire TV › Restart.
Improve the connection (3 min)
Switch to your 5 GHz network or plug in Ethernet. Move the device away from behind the TV using the HDMI extender supplied in the box.
Clear the app cache (1 min)
Fire TV: Settings › Applications › Manage Installed Applications › [app] › Clear cache. Android TV: Settings › Apps › [app] › Clear cache. Don’t use “Clear data” unless support asks; it signs you out.
Free up storage (2 min)
Devices with less than 500 MB free slow down. Uninstall apps you don’t use.
Update everything (2 min)
Install system updates and the latest app version from the official store.
